What to Do in a Dental Emergency

Knowing the right steps to take can make all the difference. Here is a quick guide for common dental emergencies.
  1. Remain calm. Find the tooth and pick it up by the chewing surface (do not touch the root).
  2. If possible, rinse the tooth with saline or water and gently reinsert it into the socket. Have your child bite on a clean cloth to hold it in place.
  3. If you cannot reinsert it, place the tooth in a small cup of milk or saline.
  4. Call us and we will arrange a time to meet you at the office.
  1. Rinse your child’s mouth with warm water.
  2. Apply a cold compress or popsicle to the outside of the cheek to reduce swelling.
  3. If you find the broken tooth fragment, place it in milk or saline and bring it with you.
  4. Contact our office right away.
  1. Have your child rinse their mouth with warm salt water.
  2. Gently floss to ensure no food is trapped.
  3. Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek if there is swelling. Do not place heat on the area.
  4. Call us to schedule an appointment, even if the pain subsides.
  1. Apply firm, direct pressure to the bleeding area with a clean cloth.
  2. If there is swelling, use a cold compress or offer a popsicle.
  3. If bleeding does not stop, go to an urgent care clinic or emergency room.
